Nine tools that give a remote team a floor plan to stand on. They differ less in what the office does than in how they bill for it — and that is the number that decides whether the office is still there in a year.

The tools
1. Virtual Hirix
The only tool here that bills the room rather than the person.
A 2D office you walk around, inside a workspace that also has team chat with spaces and DMs, and public events with a stage and numbered seats. Walk your avatar up to a teammate and a video call opens at conversation distance; walk away and it closes. It runs in the browser — no download to join.
The workspace itself is free at any team size. The office is a room you add when you want one: free for its first month, then one price a month for the whole room, from RM29 for a meeting room to RM249 for a campus. Adding people never changes the bill. Membership is verified by email domain with admin-approved joins, and billing is in Malaysian ringgit by FPX or card.
Best for: Teams that want the office, the chat and the events under one membership, and a bill that does not grow with head count.
2. Gather
The category name, now on per-member pricing.
Gather popularised the pixel-art office with proximity video. Gather 2.0 is a desktop app you download; you join an office by invite link, and an admin can set a matching email domain to upgrade visitors to members automatically. Guests can be invited on links with an expiry. Since its 2026 pricing change there is no free tier: a 30-day trial, then $12 per member a month billed annually or $15 monthly on the Essential plan.
Best for: Teams already on Gather who are happy with the desktop app and per-member billing.
3. Kumospace
A polished browser-based office with a real free tier.
Kumospace runs in the browser, with desktop and mobile apps as well, and covers spatial audio and video, persistent rooms, screen share, chat channels and DMs, broadcast mode for presentations, and guest access by link without an account. Free for up to five registered members; the Business plan is $16 per user a month billed annually or $20 monthly, with a five-member minimum. SSO and a custom domain sit on the Enterprise tier.
Best for: Teams of five or fewer, or larger teams comfortable with per-seat pricing and a five-seat floor.
4. SoWork
The lowest per-user entry price in the group.
SoWork is a virtual office that has leaned into meeting tooling — presence, chat and meeting notes in one place. It is free for up to ten users, then $6 per user a month on Basic and $15 on Premium, with discounts for annual billing.
Best for: Small teams that want per-user pricing to start low.
5. Teamflow
A virtual office aimed at sales and customer-facing teams.
Teamflow is a spatial office with an emphasis on live-call workflows. Pricing is per user: $20 a month on Seed and $30 on Business, with lower rates billed annually.
Best for: Sales floors and teams that live on calls all day.
6. Roam
A flat per-active-member rate with a broad product suite.
Roam positions itself as a whole remote-work platform — meetings, chat, scheduling and a set of AI-native products around a virtual office. It charges $19.50 per active member a month, billed monthly only.
Best for: Companies that want a single vendor for the office plus meetings and scheduling.
7. WorkAdventure
Open source, and the one you can host yourself.
WorkAdventure is open source, with the code on GitHub, so it can be self-hosted and modified. The hosted service is free for up to ten concurrent users, then €5 to €10 per user a month.
Best for: Teams with an engineer to spare who want control of the deployment.
8. Cosmos Video
Priced by concurrent users rather than named seats.
Cosmos Video charges for how many people are in the space at once, not how many have accounts, which suits teams where only some people are ever in the office together. Free for up to four concurrent users; recordings and transcripts are kept for 14 days on the free plan.
Best for: Teams whose office is busy in shifts rather than all day.
9. SpatialChat
A proximity-video space with a free tier and a low entry price.
SpatialChat is a browser-based proximity-video space used for offices and events alike, with a free tier and paid plans from about $6 per user a month.
Best for: Teams and event hosts who want a simple proximity-video room without much else.
How to choose
Start with the bill, not the demo. Multiply each per-user price by where your head count will be in twelve months, not where it is today, and add the free tier's ceiling — the moment a team crosses it is usually the moment the tool gets cancelled or the budget gets an awkward line. Then check two mechanics: whether joining needs a download (it decides whether a guest or a candidate will actually turn up), and what happens to your team's conversations if you stop paying for the office. A tool where the office is the whole product takes the chat with it.
